Savannah Cupcake Takes Off with Ben’s Chili Bowl at National Airport

Savannah Cupcake, a small batch cupcake company in Washington, DC, is getting a lot of attention lately. The loyal and new customers, of course, are still ordering as usual, but there are a potential 50-some thousand customers daily that could sink their teeth into one of these coveted cupcakes.

Ben’s Chili Bowl, the landmark Washington, DC restaurant, is set to open its doors at Ronald Reagan National Airport within the next week. It is the first-ever franchise location for the restaurant. Savannah Cupcake has signed on with Ben’s as the sole dessert vendor for the franchise operation, offering 6 desserts.

At press time, the top rated seller at the Ben’s location in Rosslyn, VA was the red velvet cupcake. Coming in neck in neck in second is the double chocolate cupcake and sweet potato pie, sold exclusively to Ben’s Chili Bowl. Other offerings include what has been touted as “the most moist carrot cake ever,” a hand held cheesecake, and a pineapple-coconut cupcake, created specifically at the request of Ben’s Chili Bowl co-owner, Kamal Ali (son of the late Ben Ali).

“We are so honored that the owners of Ben’s have chosen us to go along with them on their franchise venture,” says Bambi Frazier, co-owner of Savannah Cupcake. “When I think of their reputation that has been going 50 plus years strong, and how they have their choice of any vendor in the city…. I’m so thrilled that they chose us. Ben’s is a big deal in this area, and we will make sure our desserts live up to the quality Ben’s customers have come to expect over the decades.”

Frazier has been baking for the Ali family for several years. Most recently, she baked several dozen cupcakes for the birthday celebration of Mrs. Ali, also known in the community as “Mama.” But before her baking went professional, Frazier was actually a television news anchor in Savannah, Georgia, hence the name “Savannah Cupcake.”

“We chose that name because we fell in love with Savannah when we were there,” she says. Frazier and her husband, Chan, plan to open a cupcake boutique in Savannah in the near future. In the meantime, he’s running the business side of their company, while she bakes and puts the finishing touches on her first cookbook, which, no doubt will have a recipe or two featuring the cupcakes sold at Ben’s.

Chan Frazier, a native Washingtonian, grew up going to the Ben’s on U street. As a young child, he would be sent on an errand for his mom to get her the legendary Ben’s half smoke “with everything,” he says, and he would get the same thing for himself every time: “a chili cheese burger sub, with fries on the side,” Chan recalls with a nostalgic smile. Now he, in a sense, is on the other side of the counter.

Bambi Frazier baked as a young child with her mother and grandmother. “Most of the recipes had something chocolate,” she says, “but as long as it had butter and sugar, we could make anything happen with a mixing bowl and a spoon.”
